Our Board

The board provides strategic, spiritual, financial and governance oversight and is responsible for the mission and wellbeing of New Community Church. Members meet monthly as a full board and regularly in committees, including finance, ministry, governance/nominating, community engagement, human resources/legal, and compensation/performance review.

Nomination and selection process 

  • Christine Taylor, Chair


    Christine is passionate about introducing people to ongoing community engagement, leading a team at the LifeMoves Navigation Center and trips alongside Hands of Hope serving orphans in Zimbabwe, where she grew up. She is a retired nuclear medicine physician and Fuller Seminary graduate. Christine first met Curt as a foreign exchange high school student. Their marital journey led them into marriage ministry, and they use their experience to support and mentor other married couples. Christine and Curt live in Portola Valley and have two adult daughters. Christine enjoys gardening, hiking, pickleball, reading, and travel.

  • John Bartel, Vice Chair


    John is captivated by the upside-down nature of the Kingdom of God and has over a decade of youth ministry experience with NCC’s student ministry and Young Life. He grew up in the foothills outside of Sacramento where his childhood fostered a compulsive curiosity and a drive to discover that led him to study Physics and Nanotechnology at Penn and Stanford. After five years leading research teams in a clean energy startup, John consults for climate technologies seeking to maximize impact both scientifically and socially. He loves the outdoors, photography and reading. John and Joanna live in Menlo Park with their toddler.

  • Adam Hopkins, Finance


    Adam values being part of a community that looks for the image of God in each person, growing together in loving God and our neighbors. Originally from Portland, Oregon, he studied economics at Princeton, where he met Heather. They moved to the Bay Area in 2001, where he worked as a private equity investor and later earned an MBA at Stanford University. He currently invests in mid-stage private technology companies as a founding partner at NextEquity Partners. Adam and Heather live in Menlo Park and have a high school son and college student daughter. He enjoys playing basketball, squash, and pickleball and supporting Heather’s social entrepreneurship.

  • Abigail Bach


    Abigail followed God’s call to leave financial services over 20 years ago to pursue a career in global ministry and social justice. She works for Edify, an international nonprofit, helping to expand Christ-centered education in Africa and Latin America. She has an MBA in finance and an MA in international studies with a passion for serving alongside people breaking out of poverty. Abigail is involved at NCC with the women’s leadership team, Restorative Justice, Envision, as a Sunday greeter, and also organizes NCC Camino de Sonoma hikes. Abigail is a Menlo Park resident who enjoys hiking the beautiful local trails, skiing, international travel, and fitness classes.

  • Ted Callahan


    Ted loves NCC's community, worship, and commitment to grace-drenched discipleship. He actively serves our congregation as a member of the worship band, and took his family on the 2024 NCC Borderlands pilgrimage. Ted grew up in Nashville and came to faith during his college years at Stanford. He has worked in tech and non-profit since college and currently serves as Intuit's global accountant leader on the QuickBooks team. He is also an active board member of The Veritas Forum. Ted and Ashley live in Menlo Park with their two school-age children and college student son. He enjoys cycling, CrossFit, and making music.

  • Chris Dorst


    Chris is passionate about Christian education for all ages and is drawn to NCC because of the difference the church is making in the life of the community. He grew up in a Christian family, went to M-A High School, studied history at Stanford, where he later received a business degree, and spent 20+ years working in the consumer tech sector before joining the Stanford Athletic department. Chris has been active with Young Life and Sports Challenge International, and currently volunteers with Generations United in Redwood City. He and Marybeth live in Menlo Park and have three adult daughters and three grandchildren.

  • Kari Hanson


    Kari is thankful to be in a community that values spiritual growth and space to encounter God. She has enjoyed discipling youth, mentoring leaders, and leading small groups. Kari has a passion for designing and facilitating retreats, which she has co-led at NCC. She has a coaching certificate and MBA from NYU and has worked in promoting entrepreneurship in emerging markets. She currently teaches user-centered design, values and ethics, and unintended consequences through project-based research at Stanford. Kari and Craig live in Menlo Park. She enjoys hiking, spin class, international travel, cuisine, and visiting their two adult children.

  • Charlotte Healow


    Throughout her faith journey, Charlotte feels fortunate to have served as a volunteer for student and children's ministries, as a small group leader in various life stages, and on trips to Mexicali. She grew up in Menlo Park and is a graduate of UC Davis where she studied English, film studies, and communications. She has been working in communications and public relations for over 10 years, currently at a San Francisco-based startup. Charlotte is an avid reader and writer, a devoted San Francisco Giants fan, and a pop culture enthusiast. You’ll often see Charlotte and Danny, taking long walks through Menlo Park with their toddler and their dog, Sperry.

  • Erik Olson


    Erik is passionate about the community Jesus is building at NCC and excited to see how God will lead us into greater faith, hope and love in the coming years. He grew up in church in Sacramento and had an encounter with Jesus in high school. Erik and Jill met at Westmont College, and have lived in the Bay Area since 1997. He is a lawyer at Morrison & Foerster who leads complex litigation involving disputes over intellectual property, mergers, and corporate restructuring. Erik also serves on the board of a large Silicon Valley pro bono legal service provider. You will find Erik and Jill around Menlo Park walking, playing pickleball, planning travel, and enjoying long dinners with friends.

  • Diana Peterson


    Diana has heard God’s call to join the work of seeking educational, economic, and racial justice, and is currently engaging the NCC Envision group on the topic of incarceration. Her career in software product management evolved to working in educational software when she felt God shine a light on how education can change life trajectories. Diana has volunteered with children, coached with Future Profits, tutored with School on Wheels, and been a Reading Buddy. A Menlo Park resident, you can often find her working out with her Team Fitness buddies, sewing, hiking or walking with Russ and their two dogs, or spending time with their three adult children, who are triplets.

  • Annette Shelby


    Annette cares deeply about the NCC community. She chairs the New Beginnings Preschool board and enjoys attending women’s dinners, serving on the NCC immigrant accompaniment team, and being part of a multi-generational small group. Annette is co-founder of the Ravenswood Education Foundation, a nonprofit supporting K–8 students in East Palo Alto and eastern Menlo Park. Originally from Texas, she studied biology at Stanford and later earned her MBA there. She and her husband, John Todd, own a photography management and licensing agency. They live in Palo Alto, where Annette enjoys hiking, gardening, and reading

  • Josh Woodward


    Josh is grateful for the hospitality, spiritual formation, and NCKids ministries at NCC. He started following Jesus during high school, where he was introduced to faith through a neighborhood Bible study and the writings of CS Lewis. A native Oklahoman, he and his wife, Kate, met at the University of Oklahoma and both attended the University of Oxford before coming to the Bay Area. They have been active in marriage ministry, make a mean batch of jambalaya, and live in Los Altos Hills, where they stay busy with their four school-age children, including identical twin girls. Josh currently leads the Google Labs team and enjoys reading and swimming.
